The old saying “You can’t get good help these days” has taken an ugly turn in the world of information technology lately. According to Computerworld, more than one-half of all IT department managers are either looking for other jobs or giving serious thought to doing so. Why? The managers feel that they simply don’t have the resources necessary to get the job done.

Most of the IT decision makers interviewed in a pair of recent studies complained that C-level restrictions have undercut their autonomy while also limiting their chances for advancement. A lack of flexibility in the workplace environment was also cited as a prime motivator for seeking greener pastures elsewhere. Then there’s a third major factor: the people shortage. 63 percent of study participants noted that they failed to fill at least three IT staff positions in 2022, a 10 percent drop from the previous year. The inability to maintain a full staff has added greatly to these leaders’ frustration with their current jobs.

As a business owner, what can you do to prevent the same wave of discontent and loss of IT leadership in your organization? First, you can give your IT leaders the opportunity to lead, which was presumably what you hired them to do in the first place. Second, you can offer more work-from-home options and flexible hours. Third, you can beef up your IT staff.
