The first step would be to make a relationship with a trustworthy IT partner.  You want someone who has been around for at least five years and that will work to understand your unique business needs.  Our customers, for example, like the fact that we actually go on-site quarterly to meet with them face-to-face.  These meetings allow us to co-create the IT plan with the business owners.
