Symantec Endpoint Protection is a robust anti-virus solution for business computer systems.  We deploy and support Endpoint Protection at the majority of our customers’ sites.  From time to time we run into system specific issues when administering it.  In this case, we ran into application problems right after installing the updated version.

Issue: After installing SEP v12, system gives rundll32.exe – Application Error

System: Windows XP 32 bit and Dell D-series laptop

Error Code: The exception unknown software exception (0xc0000417) occurred in the application at location 0x60a052e4.

Solution: Uninstall SEP Application & Device Control component

• Uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection 12

  • Open Add/Remove Programs running as administrator

  • Reboot the system

  • Reinstall Symantec Endpoint Protection 12

  • Choose Custom Install

  • Under Threat Protection, do not install Application and Device Support

  • Complete the install process.

  • Reboot the system.

  • Test by opening multiple programs.
