Multi-function printers with multiple paper trays offer great advantages to small and medium offices.  A single printer can be configured to process general printing, letterhead, forms, and invoices. However, sometimes this configuration can be difficult to setup or to troubleshoot.  We ran across this issue the other day with one of our small business customers.

Issue: Printer will not print to specified tray, although the settings look correct

System: Windows XP

Error Code: No code, desired tray does not output

Solution:

  • Ensure the correct settings are in both page setup and printer properties page setup.  This usually means setting the correct tray 2-4 times. Make sure to check any advanced tabs.

  • Ensure under printer properties that the print driver knows that optional trays have been added. This is typically under a tab called device settings or something similar.

  • If you are pretty sure that everything is configured to the correct tray and that the options have been installed, try changing all the tray selectors to auto and closing out. Next go back in and reset everything back to the correct tray.

The specific issue we had was resolved by resetting the trays to auto-select, and then reconfiguring the settings.
